Best Time to Visit Argentina

It is a false idea to think that the best time to go to Argentina is strictly between October and March. Everything depends on the experiences the traveller wants to live.

Argentina’s tourist attractions during the four seasons

It is a false idea to think that the best time to go to Argentina is strictly between October and March. Everything depends on the experiences the traveller wants to live. Asking for advice in a local travel agency is always a good idea.

Best time to visit Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a great place to visit all year long. During summer (December, January and February), the Cafés set the tables on the sidewalks and there are plenty of open festivals around the parks. These provide the city with a particular flavor since everybody is out having fun. However, the weather is clearly a disadvantage as the city can be particularly humid with temperatures over 30 degrees.

During spring, the last games of the Soccer tournament plus the explosion of colors produced by the Jacarandas’ bloom fulfill the atmosphere with a unique excitement. It’s a perfect time to go on walking tours since the temperature (around 25 degrees) is pleasant and people are in a very good mood. Getting lost in some of the narrow streets of Palermo Soho with the impressive artistic graffittis as a background is an experience that you should live at least once.

Autumn and winter are obviously the seasons to feel the melancholic and dramatic Buenos Aires. This time of the year shows a particular side of the Argentine society which is very well expressed through one of its highlights: Tango.

Best time to visit Iguazu Falls

Usually, autumn and spring are great seasons to visit the Iguazu falls, even though people visit them all year round. During summer the weather is hot and humid (32° plus) but still ok if you walk with prudence.

It’s highly recommended to avoid the crowded days of the year: Easter time, Winter Holidays, and long weekends (National Holidays).

Best time to visit Mendoza province

You can visit Mendoza during the whole year. However, the best months to go are:

For wine lovers: February, March, and May. February and March are the harvest months. Therefore, the vineyards are particularly active and full of grapes. There is also a popular festivity called “vendimia” that usually takes place in March. On the other hand, the colors of the autumn season in May combined with the first snow falls and the low season’s calm provide with the perfect conditions to have a romantic getaway to the land of the best Malbec in the world.

For the active travellers: Summer is the best time to go trekking in the Andean Cordillera (Parque Provincial Aconcagua, Vallecitos, and many other areas), as well as going on adventure trips, such as rafting in San Rafael. In winter, Mendoza is popular for its famous “Las Leñas” ski center.

Best time to visit Salta & the Northwest of Argentina

Spring and autumn are probably the best seasons to head to this amazing place since the summer is rainy and the winter is very cold. Nevertheless, in summer time there are some remarkable festivities such as the local carnivals in the Humahuaca’s Gorge.

Best time to visit Patagonia: El Calafate, Fitz Roy, Ushuaia, Peninsula Valdes and Bariloche

First of all, it’s important to notice that Patagonia covers a huge territory. Therefore, the weather conditions change from place to place. The other very important fact is that the weather in Patagonia is very unpredictable and can change literally in a matter of minutes. It is usually dry compared to other places such as Buenos Aires or Iguazu.

Peninsula Valdes & Puerto Madryn

The main highlight in this area is the ocean’s wildlife: whales, penguins, orcas, sea elephants, dolphins, birds, foxes, rheas, and other incredible animals coexist in a remarkable ecosystem.

Naturally, the main protagonists in Peninsula Valdes are the whales and the penguins, which inhabit the area every season: you can usually find penguins from September to March unlike the whales that appear between June and November. Therefore, a great time to visit this region is in October, when you can enjoy them both.

El Calafate, Perito Moreno Glacier, and Fitz Roy

The high season for visiting the Glacier Perito Moreno and its neighbors “El Chalten” (Mount Fitz Roy and Mount Torre) and “Torres del Paine” (Chile) is between October and March. The day light lasts 17 hours during the longest days and the temperatures can oscillate between 15 and 20 degrees. It’s also a great opportunity to reach most of the hidden glaciers since the highways are not blocked by the snow (ideal for trekking in Torres del Paine and El Chalten, particularly the Fitz Roy Trek). Nevertheless, summer is windier than the rest of the year.

Autumn and winter are great for photography, but it is important to highlight that many Estancias and walking trails are closed. The temperature in winter has an average of -2 C° (with peaks that can be way lower).

Ushuaia & Tierra del Fuego

As in El Calafate, the weather in Ushuaia is very unpredictable. The tourist season is similar as the one in El Calafate but it has another peak in winter because it hosts one of the best ski centers in Argentina: Cerro Castor. The temperatures are similar to Calafate and it has the advantage of being regulated by the sea, which comes through the Beagle Channel. TIP: There is a Penguin colony available for tourists between October and March

Bariloche & Lakes District

There is no specific season to visit Bariloche because it’s a popular destination during the whole year. In summer time, there is an unlimited list of outdoor activities, from horseback riding to rafting or trekking. In winter time, skiing and snowboarding are the preferred activities for the winter sports lovers. The Cathedral Hill is among the best ski centers in the world. The season for fly fishing extends from November to April. The temperature average during summer is 20° C, whereas in winter the temperature is around 0°. There can be peaks at 33°C in summer and -15°C in winter.
