The carnival is a cheerful and funny celebration, a time of year when you can strip the clothes you wear every day for a few hours to become a completely different person, a time of year when you can pull the plug and really stop, leaving all your troubles behind. The carnival is a feast in short, that allows us to remain for a day suspended in time and laugh at ourselves, through the beautiful public parades and through the art of disguise.
Italy has a really rooted tradition of Carnival. Every Italian city has its own celebrations however small. There are some cities like Viareggio in the province of Lucca that have a much older and more important traditions.
The Carnival of Viareggio is really great, a must-see event for all those who still have not got a chance. On February 5, 12, 19, 21 and 26 and March, marvelous parades take place in Viareggio. The promenade of Viareggio is indeed transformed into a magical place where beautiful floats made of paper-mâché by the people who live in Viareggio and neighboring areas, requiring months of preparation, slide one after another. The floats are true works of art that can represent any type of subject, but very often they are a symbol of the current political situation, a kind of political satire in truly extraordinary costumes. There are many people of all ages in costume who sing and dance and put on a truly exceptional plays. All people present get dressed for the occasion and you can see entire families who have put in place all their creativity, trying to make the best and more original clothes.
