Table Mountain – A Provisional New 7 Wonders of Nature

Table Mountain

Located in Cape Town, South Africa, Table Mountain is a provisional New 7 Wonders of Nature candidate. Even with this status however, Table Mountain is fast on its way into becoming one of the top tourist destination sites in the world. Even the buzz as one of the provisional New7Wonders has created quite a stir in the tourism industry, causing more and more people to travel to South Africa just to see this natural wonder.

Why Table Mountain?

Deemed “Table” Mountain mainly because of its flat top; this natural wonder is an incredibly eye-catching figure. It is a significant tourist attraction in South Africa and part of the Table Mountain National Park. It forms an interesting backdrop to Cape Town and is often reached by tourists through hiking or using the cableway to reach the top.

What’s at the Top?

The top part of Table Mountain is actually made up of sandstone and is very resistant to erosion. This probably accounts for the rich offerings of flora and fauna in the area, providing hikers with an excellent nature trip while getting a great view of the sea below. It is estimated that more than 2,200 species of plants exist in the area and a specially protected area is in existence to ensure that the natural wonder continues to prosper.

The fauna is also something to behold although it would take a keen eye to spot them. The most common animal on the mountain is the rock hyrax or “dassie”. Other animals include snakes, tortoises, porcupines and mongooses. Lions were once part of this environment as well as leopards but they have been hunted to the point where their numbers are practically zero in the area.

Thanks to the influx of tourists, these animals are now more sociable than ever, usually hanging out places where food might be in abundance. This includes locations where tourists might discard their food. Keep in mind though that this is forbidden on Table Mountain so make sure to always carry a plastic bag for bringing the trash down.

Activities at Table Mountain

For those who think that “hiking” is the only thing to do here, be surprised. As a significant tourist attraction, Table Mountain has been prepped to welcome tourists with different interests. Aside from the beautiful flora and the abundant fauna, visitors will find themselves enjoying physical activities depending on what they want to do.

For rock climbing enthusiasts, an area of Table Mountain is specially equipped for the sport. Actually, the area provides varying degrees of difficulty which is why even beginners with the sport will find themselves entertained. For the more experienced enthusiasts, Table Mountain also offers other climbing choices.

Caving is also a popular pastime in the area with several large caves made of sandstone, a fairly unique phenomenon since most of the popular caves are built in limestone.
