What to Do and What to See in Koh Samui

It is famous for the undeniable beauty of its beautiful beaches of white sand and clear blue sea.

Koh Samui (also written Ko Samui) is the third largest island in Thailand. About 20 years ago the island was very little known and it was inhabited only by local fishermen. In the early 90’s it slowly began to attract tourists from all over the globe. It then became one of the most sought after tourist destinations among travelers. Koh Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand. It is famous for the undeniable beauty of its beautiful beaches of white sand and clear blue sea. The inland covered with lush tropical forests and the high-level tourist facilities at cheap prices make this island a magical place to spend your tropical vacation.

Since then it has become one of the most popular holiday destinations. Tourists from all over the world go there to visit it.

The island of Samui was discovered by travelers in the early ’70s. Koh Samui has always been considered the favorite destination for many travelers among Thai tropical paradises. Because of its location Samui is affected less than other places by the extreme changes in climate brought on by monsoons, so you can visit it at any time of year.

Normally the rainy season begins in late October until mid-December. The hottest period (between 34 and 37 degrees Celsius) begins in mid-April until mid-June. The coldest period is January when the temperature can sometimes reach 18 degrees at night. During the year the temperature varies from a minimum of 18 up to a maximum of 37 degrees Celsius. Brief thunderstorms are common throughout the year.

Until a few years ago the only way to get to Koh Samui was by sea, while today the Bangkok Airways offers a dozen daily flights to and from Bangkok. The main town is Nathon where you will find banks, post office, supermarkets and a wide choice of shops open from 08.30 am until 18.30 pm.

The island’s main beach, Chaweng, offers a wide variety of shops and supermarkets, restaurants, internet point, rental cars and motorbikes, etc. The most popular and known beach where the main hotels of high category focus is Chaweng.

Here, the sea and the beach are really beautiful although they the northern part of the beach should be avoided because of the proximity of the island Matlang. During low tide the seabed is muddy and not suitable for bathing.

There are many things to do in Koh Samui. In fact, in addition to the beautiful sea, you can also go trekking in the mountains of the island, or exploring the depths of the area. The structure is highly developed: you can do trekking on foot or by bicycle. There are many temples scattered throughout the island. The Big Buddha: the tranquillity that reigns in Samui has its fulcrum here.

A visit to the Temple is a must for all tourists. The 12 feet statue of Buddha spread peace and serenity. Here you have the opportunity to donate a brick for the construction of the temple. Near the Temple there is a tiny village where tourists can buy souvenirs ranging from clothes to shells and costumes, from ornaments of wood to pictures. The Temple is located in the northeast of the island and from there you can see Koh Phangan. Hin Ta and Hin Tai: the Great Father and Great Mother are granitic rocks and it is said that they bring fertility if you touch them.

The Magic Buddha Garden is a garden located in the hills where mythological statues stand guard.

The Butterfly Garden: a really nice butterfly garden. At a certain time of the year you are covered by these harmless and colourful insects. Namuang Waterfalls are 18 meter high and are located on the mountains in the northeast.

The Ancient House is a 150 years old wooden house and in the shop of pearls you can buy some very beautiful pearls at a reasonable price.

If you prefer doing more than just relaxing on the beach, Samui offers the opportunity to practice many sports such as: golf, Thai box, diving, snorkeling, hiking, wind surfing. You can also go on interesting trips to visit other paradise islands. In fact, for fun lovers, in the location of Chaweng and Lamai there are an infinite varieties of public places open until late at night where you can spend an amazing evening. The beautiful beaches of Chaweng, Maenam, Lamai, Bophut, Big Buddha, Choeng Mon Hua Thanon and thanks to their white sand and crystal clear water of the sea give a magic touch to this island paradise. Koh Samui offers many other things to see: tropical forests, waterfalls, temples, a butterfly garden, an aquarium and a zoo.

Many fascinating beaches are located in national parks while if you are looking for secluded beaches, untouched gems, rarely visited by foreigners, especially the one where you can find solitude that gives the tropical islands of their fascinating character, then try to reach islands like Ko Surin, Ko Tarutao, Ko Phetra or Hat Chao Mai.

Do not miss the excursions to the islands of Ko Phangan, Ko Tao and Ang Thong Marine Park! When to go on vacation on this beautiful island? The best period to visit Koh Samui is from the month of December until the month of March when you can have a mild weather with dry heat and light breeze. However the other months have amazing days even if it can get very wet and the rains can be a little bit more frequent.

The place offers a wide choice of hotels and resorts. There are restaurants of every nationality and wellness centers for the care of your body everywhere.
